По мотивам древнего мифа о Василии Буслаеве Англ
Author Lev Gumilshtein, translated by Nadia Sandring.
With confidence and sternness through the waves
An adamant in slate green foam surfing
A ship was slicing her far-reaching way
To those lands that Lord had blessed with mercy
The stars were gazing from the velvet dome
With their twinkle mirrored on the sea face
A hundred thousand of enigmatic souls
Kept their night watch with indifference
Vasily-Prince was handsome and was young
As mighty as a god, he lived it up with ease
Together with his crew of dashing diehards
To them, they made good fortune yield
“So bottoms up, friend, hauley hey!
Let’s sing a shanty and remember home
Give, Pereplut, fair wind to our sails
Let ocean providence protect our souls!
We mustn’t dread the ugly ocean Depth
Like a recluse, she dwells in gloomy mirk
I am a man! She’s just a broad who has
To slave for me and all my lads in turn.”
Through rustling waves and squeaking masts
There came a female voice from the abyss
Those quiet words it had to them pronounced
Got all the daredevils frozen stiff
“Come hear it, oh, undaunted ataman
You’re so strong and merry, void of fear
You’ve conquered many of remote lands
You are a noble prince; your path is clear.
I am a woman, an abyss unfathomed
I’ve been for eons sleeping in the dark
I’m cold down here, I’m lonesome
Please, let me be and go your path!”
“Hey listen, wench, it’s not befitting us
Seafaring men, to heed your ravings
You’d better carry me across the waves
Don’t bargain, show me obedience
I am a master here, and I’m bound to reign
Accept your fate, no need for your response
Make no mistake, all this is my domain
Or I will punish thee and have no qualms”
Another wave, the longship struck the beach
Adroitly jumped the crew off onto land
The sea doused presently the prince’s heels
“That’s better, lick my boot, no more exempt”
And all at once, from the abysmal depths
There rose a column like a shining blade
The prince dissolved beneath the tidal crest
All rushed to rescue to arrive too late
And all was over in a splitting second
The crew went quiet in their silent mourn
‘Twas written in the stars, it happened
The prince was gone and he would ne’er return.
So bottoms up, good fellow, hauley hey!
Let’s raise our cups and keep remembering
The friend who by the ocean was detained
It served him right! Keep clear of offending!
