Cavatina Aleco

The camp’s asleep,
The moon above is like a midnight beauty shining,
My heart is trembling and repining.
What kind of sadness tortures me?

With no concern with no vexation
I spend my roaming gypsy days,
Despising chains of education,
Oh yes, I’m free in many ways.
Oh yes, I’m free in many ways.

I don’t admit the ruling power
Of Fate, insidious and blind,
Almighty, here comes the hour
For soul to find a piece of mind.

Zemfira, she was so adoring
When touching tenderly my arm
The silence of a grassland’s charm
She spent with me. The nights of glory!

So often by her mellow dancing
And by her kisses so entrancing
My dreaminess away
She chased so painlessly and easy.

I still remember full of passion
Her joyful whisper in reply:
I love your asking for compassion,
I’m yours, Aleco, till I die.

What I remembered I forgot
While she was whispering a lot
And I was kissing every spot
Of her attractive charming features,

Her silky plaits like night-time creatures
And lips of a gypsy…

But she was
So full of fire that arose
When she had asked to hold her stronger,
And what, Zemfira, happened then?
Zemfira has a man,
Zemfira loves me no longer.
